ACROSS THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DESERT
Edward John Eyre (1815-1901) ex-
plorer and administrator, born at
Hornsea, Yorkshire, emigrated to New
South Wales in 1833 and became
interested in exploration. In 1840 he
led an expedition from Adelaide to-
wards the centre of Australia but
encountered such difficulties that he
turned south to the coast at the head
of the Great Australian Bight where
he sent the expedition back and con-
tinued westwards with his overseer and
three natives. His overseer was killed
by two of the natives and Eyre con-
tinued with the third. After extreme
hardships they reached Albany, having
covered 850 miles under appalling
conditions.
