Coin History
The Braided Hair series made its debut in 1839 and continued through the end of the large Cent denomination in 1857. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this type features a left-facing portrait of Liberty as the main obverse device. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and the haircurls atop the brow are neatly braided. The reverse is similar to those of preceding Cent types with the denomination ONE CENT surrounded by a wreath.
With the exception of the final-year 1857, none of the issues in the Braided Hair Cent series are particualrly scarce in an absolute sense. As a type, this series is also relatively easy to obtain in Uncirculated grades with a BN or RB color designation. Full Red examples are conditionally scarce, however, particularly at the finer levels of Mint State preservation.
