PORTLAND (PNW) POSTER SCENE EDUCATION GUIDE
There are basically four types of concert posters for Portland
STYLE 1:
MODERN
LOCAL PROMOTER POSTER (Digital or Offset)
-
DIGITAL
- Created and mass produced using local digital print houses by & for the promoter. The artwork is gathered from the record company, provided by the band and even the internet to make artwork for the poster. So the quality of the visual material can vary between high to even low resolution items pulled from the internet. They need to get the posters out quick to sell tickets so attention to detail is not the first priority. These posters are then distributed by street teams to local record stores, various shops, concert venues and finally posted on telephone poles in the high foot traffic areas of Portland (Like Hawthorne Blvd). They are
always
11x17 in size and printed on text weight paper.
OFFSET
- A modern throwback to the vintage style. Produced mostly for the boutique venues like the Doug Fir, Wonder Ballroom and various smaller clubs in Seattle that used similar promoters. Various hired local poster artists created them for each show. Offset printed. Not a photocopy or digitally produced. Unfortunately the Doug Fir has procured their own digital printer and has now switched from the offset style.
STYLE 2: RECORD LABEL
OFFSET PROMOTION POSTER
- Created and mass produced using 4-color offset print houses by the record label for the band. These are of the highest quality both in materials and imagery. They can come in varying sizes, printed on gloss paper stock and generally do not have the venue or dates in the artwork. Sometimes sold by the band (signed and unsigned) at their merch booth.
STYLE 3:
VINTAGE
LOCAL PROMOTER POSTER -
Created and mass produced, often run on small one color (OFFSET). Most were printed on colored sheets of varying paper stock. Neon sheets were synonymous with the early days of the Roseland. Most were 11x17 but some were smaller sizes such as during the era of Starry Night to Roseland transition and the Melody ballroom was utilized. These are more desirable due to their age and nostalgia type values since most were destroyed by the elements or thrown away.
STYLE 4: LIMITED EDITION SILKSCREEN
PROMOTIONAL TOUR POSTER
- These are currently all the rage. For-profit limited edition on high quality card stocks silk-screened and sold by the band and artist. Colors, sizes and price vary depending on the artist and band. These are pretty self explanatory.
