What is Nang kwak?
A statue of beckoning lady, known as Nang kwak in Thai symbolizing a beautiful woman wearing Thai traditional dress has the golden or jewel ornaments on her forehead, neck and arms. A Nang kwak is in straight-forwardly, kneeling position, having her right arm raised beckoning (customers) pose, which is simply being remarked.
Nang kwak is considered a goddess or female spirit bringing fortune and prosperity or another reason is that, to attract the customers.
How become a Nang kwak? (Nang – a female term used for women, Kwak – to beckon)
Over 2500 years ago, there was a merchant, Sujidtaprahma and his wife, Sumanta who had a daughter, “
Supawadee
”, lived in a city, Matshigasanth or Mitshigasanth, currently known as Saheth-Maheth, in Uttar Pradesh, the northern Indian region.
They worked from day to day just to survive. One day, while Supawadee was selling things at a market. She heard some of lessons from a Buddhist monk and fortunately, she was interested in what the Phra Gumarn Gasaba Thaera’s sermon giving a lesson of Buddhism in the market and the Gasaba Thaera, a Buddhist saint, (Arahant) noticed her dedication. He blessed her from all of his powers. Later, Supawadee was attending in a group to listen to a sermon of Shin Thiwali (known as Phra Sivali) known as Phra Sivali, also a Buddhist saint, and she praised for his fortunate. Supawadee put all of her concentration and devotion to the sermon. Accordingly, she was proficient in morality and blessed by him.
After being blessed by two Buddhist saints, her family was found being successful in business and became wealthy since then. The statue of Supawadee was built after her death and has become widespread among Buddhism followers and finally come to Thailand.
